The short answer
For WonderCloth reusable viscose and plant-based cleaning cloth programs, GSM should be specified together with material ratio, construction, layer count, size and edge finishing. Standard single-side fabric is commonly discussed around 280-380 GSM. A sewn double-layer cloth should not be compared to single-side GSM without clarifying the calculation.
Common GSM misunderstandings
| Buyer phrase | Risk | Better RFQ wording |
|---|---|---|
| 300 GSM dishcloth | Unclear whether this means fabric GSM or finished product. | 300 GSM single-side fabric, size 30 x 30 cm, finished piece weight target. |
| 600 GSM double cloth | May be single fabric doubled, not one 600 GSM fabric. | Two layers of 300 GSM fabric sewn together, before edge tolerance. |
| Heavy absorbent cloth | Performance is not only GSM. | Confirm fiber ratio, pile/knit feel, thickness, size and use case. |
What to include in a custom GSM RFQ
- Material family and target ratio, such as viscose, regenerated cellulose, wood fiber, bamboo fiber or blended construction.
- Whether the GSM refers to single-side fabric, double-layer finished product or target piece weight.
- Size, tolerance, layer count, edge finishing, color and packaging format.
- Absorbency, softness, rinse feel, lint expectation and wash-cycle expectation.
- Destination market and any retailer documentation or testing requirements.
When WonderCloth is a fit
WonderCloth is a fit when the buyer needs OEM discussion around material ratio, GSM, size, color, edge finish, label, packaging and sample confirmation. The most useful starting point is a target function and channel, then sample development around GSM and hand feel.
When WonderCloth is not a fit
WonderCloth is not the right route if the buyer only wants a commodity microfiber towel GSM, a disposable nonwoven wipe basis weight, or a finished-product weight guarantee without clarifying size, edge and moisture condition.
